Merton Green Action Group

We would like firstly to wish every reader a Happy New Year!

We are awaiting the objections to our application to make the Open Spaces at Merton Green and Ash Tree Road a Village Green.

Barratt homes were given a six week extension by the Council in which to submit their objections. Several of the group along with our solicitor Mr Hugh Candler have had some discussion with Barratts already and there is likely to be further discussions in the New Year. Our aim remains the same which is to preserve the Open Spaces in that area.

We have gained the support of Hamish Sandison, who is a senior partner for the law firm, Field Fisher Waterhouse of London. He is also the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Monmouthshire and is involved in a number of campaigns in the area including the Dispute over Abergavenny Market. He is very keen to help and feels we have a strong application.

We already know that our claim will go to a Public Enquiry early next year, so the group will be busy after Christmas preparing for this. The fight goes on and we are always looking for new ways to raise money.

The Christmas Cracker in December raised nearly £600.00.Thanks to everyone who supported us and the many people who rolled their sleeves up to help man the stalls.

We have raised over £7,000 this year for our legal costs..a fantastic result! We welcome all support and if anyone wishes to join our campaign just let us know.. Caerwent Villagers have been known for their letter writing skills over a number of issues in past years!

We hope to bring you more news in the next magazine.
